I understand that it takes time to reshape an association that has lost its luster. Sometimes the new administration has to review the officers, committee heads and structure of the volunteer corps itself. What I don’t understand is how the United States Polo Association can, in good conscience, support the establishment of the Constitution Committee, which consists of a single member!
It’s been a while since I studied early American history, but if I learned anything it was that the Constitution of the United States was the culmination of a committee of several people. The most notable of those who influenced but did not participate in the actual writing were Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Thomas Paine.
The USPA has decided, in its wisdom, to entrust the job to one man, the chairman of the committee and the committee’s only member, George Alexander.
Now I don’t care if you’re a fan of George Alexander’s or not. The problem I have with this arrangement is that one man is the committee. I can’t imagine that there is no one else in our vast membership who isn’t qualified to serve on the committee in an effort to give any considerations at least one other point of view.
Over the past year I have offered a number of suggestions to the United States Polo Association and the Polo Training Foundation. It doesn’t appear that any members of the august ruling bodies either read this blog or, more understandably feel any necessity to listen to anyone outside of the incestuous circle in which they meet.
I ‘m not a big fan of the expression “no brainer” (definition-something so simple or easy as to require no thought.), but this is certainly an occasion on which to use it.
If the USPA does anything constructive in the organizational area of itself, it should be, no, must be the restructuring and overhaul of the Constitution Committee and the possible retirement of its chairman and only member.

A quick check in the 1997 Blue Book shows the person in question was on the Constitution Committee, Insurance Committee, Marketing Committee, and the Rules Committee. It’s pretty much the same people in charge today as it was 11 years ago. What does that tell you? Some things never change? It tells me that most of what has been written on this web site is factual, honest and true. It also tells me that these people are out of touch with reality and don’t give a damn about anything but their free tickets to the Open.
Everyone owes Backhander the respect he/she deserves for exposing these joksters for what they really are. Thank you Backhander and don’t let the bastards get you down!
