Who’s watching the Argentine Open?

In a few short days Adolfo Cambiaso’s La Dolfina polo team will meet Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres and the Ellerstina team in the finals of the 114th Argentina Open Championships.

Five of the eight players on the field carry 10-goal handicaps (Cambiaso,Pieres, Pieres, Aguerre, and Castagnola).  The remaining three players are rated at 9-goals (Monteverde, MacDonough and MacDonough).  And it promises to be a great championship match.  The question I have is, “Who is going to be watching?”

Now I understand how popular polo is in Argentina and that there will be tens of thousands of spectators in the stands for the match.  And I know that it is being carried live on ESPN in Argentina, but to the majority of the polo world it is an event they will never see.

Apart from a number of foreign players who have been competing in some tournaments in Argentina and have decided to stick around, or a select few who have flown for the occasion, I would estimate that over 99% of the polo community outside of Argentina will never see one of the games most exciting competitions.

The Argentine Open fields virtually every 10-goal player in the world, and it should be noted that over 80% of the rest of the world’s players have never seen a 10-goaler in action much less a 39 goal team playing a 38-goal team.

In reflection, it is interesting to note that the few countries that have produced 10-goal players outside of Argentina, don’t currently boast that honor today.  Carlos and Memo Gracida (Mexico) and Mike Azzaro and Adam Snow (United States) were the last of the non-Argentines to carry 10-goal ratings.  England, India and Australia have to go way back to claim the honor, so it is unlikely that the locals there have had an occasion to see a top native player in action.

We know that over 95% of the players in the world are rated at 2-goals or less, and that the majority of the polo in the world is low-goal polo, but that fact shouldn’t detract from the splender of the upcoming finals.

The Open at Palermo is as important to the world polo community as the World Series is to Little Leaguers in America or the World Cup to footballers, and its value cannot be overlooked.

The problem appears to lie in the lack of promotion.  Yes, the Open will be aired on ESPN Argentina, but who else is going to be able to watch it.  Heck, even the finals of the U. S. Open, which was filmed, has never been aired, and the British Open hasbeen seen by a limited audience while the seasons at Deauville and Sotogrande hardly get noticed at all.

You can’t grow a game if no one gets to see it at its best, but that effort is going to have to come from the various polo organizations and associations around the world.  We can either keep this game as our own personal secret, or we can band together in an effort to promote and publicize it on a global level.

Personally, I think it’s time we shared this wonderful and exciting sport with the rest of the world.

  • Backhander – thank you for this and other insightful columns which you have written in recent weeks. The subject of polo on TV has been something I have been a strong advocate of for a number of years and it’s been very frustrating to see other countries take the lead on this important topic. England has televised their major matches on Sky4 for the last five years. ESPN has covered the Argentine Open for over 10 years. While there has been an effort put forward on the Triple Crown of Polo in this country it’s only a small step in the right direction.

ESPN has the ability to re-broadcast the Argentine Open, in English, if anyone would step forward with some incentive to show them some kind of support or interest. I’m afraid that those in power have little or no interest in this subject or we would have seen some action by now.

It’s a shame that the American players who can’t make it to Buenos Aires have to miss such a spectacular event made only better by slow motion, replays and all of the other elements that TV brings to such a sport.

Before television there were very few tennis players and golfers. Before TV the NFL games were only carried on local stations. Look at the growth of these sports today. National exposure through such a powerful medium can only bring positive results. Can you explain to me why arm wrestling is on ESPN and not polo?

  • It boggles the mind that water polo has more television and internet exposure than polo. Try this … google women’s polo and see what cyberspace finds.

    Curling is an olympic sport?

On the other hand, where was everyone, all those self-proclaimed fanatics of polo who will be in Palermo on Saturday , and all those worldwide tourists here especially to watch the finest polo , where was everyone for the finals of the Camera de Deputados today, in Palermo and free ?

  • Claudia- Thank you for speaking your mind, but what do you think the solution is? Are there any efforts to promote the game or is it destined to remain an exclusive sport of the rich? Hell, yachting gets more exposure.
What I want to know is what are you going to do about it? Who are you going to speak with? What do you want done, and how are you going to do your part to make that change? Remember Claudia, if you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

  • We will never have this level of polo on TV, because the winners will never be other than Argentina, therefore is is not good business for the northern hemisphere. In the mid 1900s there was an American team that won the Argentine Open once. And that was it. Never more. Again, no business opportunity here=no TV.

  • The Argentine Open was broadcast on Dec. 8th on http://www.ESPN360.com. It still can be seen along with several preminary matches — all are listed under “Replay” — available to anyone with Verizon as their high speed internet provider (but Verizon may not be the only one).

    The Hurlingham was shown too.

I can’t remember where I learned about the broadcasts. Apparently there wasn’t much publicity. But I hope a lot of people watch and support ESPN360, because I’m already looking forward to next year.

  • Gail- Thank you for that information. I wasn’t aware of that availability, and I’m sure many others weren’t either.

  • I happen to think that there is alot of potential for womens professional polo to make huge leaps and strides in sponsored polo events.
I actually think that we will soon see an all womens polo club pop up somewhere. I know womens polo in Argentina has grown immensely in the last 3 years or so and I understand it continues today. I truly believe there is enough interest in that venue right now to move forward on it. People like Sunny Hale and many others others would be quite capable of organizing such an effort with the neccessary sponsorship. All they would need is a club or 2 to call their home(s), known for mostly womens polo. I believe there are enough women players with interest from coast to coast that with any kind of legit organization and real corporate sponsorship(which is VERY possible for the ladies) and some kind of legit facility to call home it is possible.

  • Dear Backhander,

I have only just read your comments and you may not know that I have created an organisation called Polonetworks to help unite everyone together and use this platform to assist in developing the game and close the gaps in the communication of polo around the world.

Polonetworks aims to do many things but it also will provide a resource and tool for the industry and its members.

You talk of ‘banding together’ then please register at Polonetworks. It launches officially very soon but for the last 6 months has already gathered up over 37 playing countries and members and associations just by word of mouth.

Polo is a global sport and Polonetworks represents the global nature of polo and its members. But the key is that those who wish the same for the sport all work together.

When all the opinions, information and ideas come together in one area then all the facts can be addressed and the ideas can be dealt with and the required needs actioned as a group with one voice.

Looking forwarding to welcoming you to Polonetworks.

    Kind regards

    Lucy Northmore
